Annual Event

Vertical Divider
The Friends hosts an annual event to showcase the Preserve and raise awareness about the restoration efforts for the property. We had a very successful event in October 2019; the evening included a presentation by Dr. Lee Frelich, forest ecologist at the University of Minnesota.

In 2024, we cohosted three Master Plan open houses with the city. Stay tuned for information about our upcoming events. Connect with us.

Citizen Science

The Friends have been leading bird and plant surveys at the Preserve. Bird surveys are typically scheduled early mornings in May (during the migration season). We have collected some pre-restoration baseline information on birds species present at the Preserve and have continued with annual surveys. The Phase One Oak Savanna restoration (11 acres) began in winter 2022 and this will provide more open, flower-rich habitat conducive for songbirds foraging for insects.

Restoration

The Friends help organize invasive plant removal, seed collection, and planting events. Once the ground thaws in the spring (April to June), we usually hold eight to ten garlic mustard removal events. In late spring we conduct vegetation surveys in 17 established plots throughout the Preserve. From April to October, we survey the site for pollinators bi-monthly. In autumn of 2024, we began seed collecting and will continue this going forward. If you would like to be added to our restoration related email notifications, please connect with us.
